Overview

A hotel engineer is responsible to troubleshoot and repair hotel equipment, facilities, and systems (including HVAC and electrical). Job duties regularly include performing preventative maintenance, painting, and touching up furniture, walls, and other surfaces, making regular inspections, coordinating the maintenance staff, diagnosing potential problems, and staying within budget both time and expenses.

 

Team members of the Engineering department strive to maximize guest engagement, achieve operational excellence, and uphold brand standards. Engineers are responsible for maintaining the building, grounds, and physical plant with particular attention towards safety, security, and asset protection.

Responsibilities

    • Respond and attend to guest and in house requests for repair, maintenance, and preventative maintenance. Resolve general plumbing issues such as unclogging drains, plunging toilets, and repairing leaky spigots, plumbing lines, pumps, and faucets. Perform general HVAC trouble shooting and repairs.
    • Perform miscellaneous repairs such as maintenance on equipment, dry wall repair, vinyl wall covering installation/replacement throughout hotel area.
    • Perform preventative maintenance on tools and equipment (electrical, mechanical, vacuums, televisions), including cleaning, troubleshooting and lubrication.
    • Troubleshoot and repair kitchen equipment.
    • Must always follow the hotel’s policies and procedures regarding the safe operation and storage of tools, equipment, and machines as well as the handling of corrosive and flammable liquids.
    • An Engineer assigned to apply paint, stain varnish, or enamel to property walls, ceilings, and furniture must be able to do so in a professional manner and are able to effectively:
      • Use brushes, spray guns, or rollers.
      • Responsible for maintaining property color scheme specifications.
      • Responsible for maintaining and match shades of areas.
      • Apply primers or sealers to prepare new surfaces, such as bare wood or metal, for finish coats.
      • Remove old finishes by stripping, sanding, wire brushing, burning, or using water and/or abrasive blasting.
      • Cover surfaces with appropriate material for protection during painting and posts appropriate paint signs.
      • Clean up and store paint and painting tools and equipment in appropriate areas.
      • Use proper equipment, wear appropriate personal protective clothing (PPE), and employ correct lifting procedures, as necessary, to avoid injury.
      • Coordinate with the vendor in order to modify colors of paint, stain, or varnish.
      • Take care of the area when the front of the house area-painting job is being carried out.
      • Always place the ‘Engineering at work’ signage or door hanger when working in public area or guest rooms.
      • Complete appropriate safety training and certifications to perform work tasks.

     

    • Maintain daily logs of operation and maintenance.
    • Communicate with leaders/team members when necessary to resolve maintenance issues.
    • Maintain accurate logs and records as required and ensure regulatory compliance to facility regulations and safety standards and procedures are followed; report maintenance problems, safety hazards, accidents, or injuries; and complete safety training and certifications.
    • Ensure uniform and personal appearance are clean and professional, maintain confidentiality of proprietary information, and protect company assets.
    • Perform carpentry work as directed/needed.
    • Perform swimming pool maintenance and fitness equipment repairs.
    • Use computer programs/handheld devices for communication purposes.
    • Welcome and acknowledge all guests according to company standards, anticipate and address guests' service needs, and assist individuals with disabilities.
    • Speak with others using clear and professional language.
    • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with others and listen and respond appropriately to the concerns of other team members.
    • Ensure adherence to quality expectations and standards. Accountable for understanding and usage of HotSOS system. Completing work orders and tasks in an efficient manner as they are assigned to optimize departmental performance.
    • Maintain the physical plant including equipment, refrigeration, HVAC, plumbing, water treatment, electrical and life safety systems and make repairs to such equipment if necessary.
    • Participate in preventative maintenance program to perform services include painting, repair work, renovations and the replacement of furniture and equipment. Communicate areas that need attention to staff and follow-up to ensure understanding.
    • Learn how to operate all functional equipment for all seasons and assist with upcoming storms. Maintaining the grounds (i.e. snow removal, keeping common pass-throughs safe and clear for our guests and team members).
    • Ensure daily operations to be incompliance with all engineering policies, standards and procedures are being followed and documented.
    • Participate in the development and implementation of corrective action plans to improve guest satisfaction and strive to improve service performance.
    • Identify opportunities to optimize performance and create value by challenging existing processes, encouraging innovation and driving necessary change.
    • Establish and maintain open, collaborative internal and external relationships. Develop lasting relationships with guests to secure repeat business.

Qualifications

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED or equivalent years of relevant work experience required.
  • Experience: 3 or more years of Maintenance in a 5 star hotel preferred

  • Ability to turn or twist body parts in a circular motion.
  • Ability to tolerate exposure to heat, cold, chemicals, and loud/noisy environment.
  • Ability to operate potentially hazardous equipment.

  • Deep understanding of lifestyle hotels.
  • Self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit and strong organizational skills
  • Must meet legal requirements for any required licensing.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
